All this discussion of "excusing" or "equating" is completely missing the point. The goal of this story is to enhance understanding of what happened and why, not to score points against the Soviets, even though the opportunity to do so is there. This article would not be in any way improved by self-congratulatory stone-throwing when my country, the US, shot down an airliner 5 years later for similar reasons.
