The other reply is correct. From my reply to a similar question on Reddit: "Nope, because Captain Hamilton would have had less time to pull up. By the time the plane actually struck the ground, its rate of descent had decreased from a peak of 24 feet per second down to 18 feet per second due to his efforts."
